Mike Serba was born in Toronto, Canada on June 4, 1981; the second of three children to Valerie and Jim Serba.
From a very early age Michael exhibited a fun loving nature, an inclination to be an entertainer and a love for children. Michael would always entertain any infant that might be present and when his baby sister arrived, he had an ever present and willing audience for his performance. He never lost his propensity to have fun with and entertain his friends.
Michael started to play hockey relatively late in life for a Canadian boy, nevertheless it became a passion at which he excelled and progressed quickly and was fortunate to find success both as an individual and as a member of a number championship teams.
Mike graduated with honors as an Ontario Scholar from Richview Collegiate in west end of Toronto in 2000. While attending his first year at The University of Toronto Michael was noticed by the coaching staff of Vermont’s Norwich University while playing a junior hockey game in Ontario. He transferred to Norwich University to continue towards a degree in business and be a student athlete as a member of the Norwich Cadets men’s ice hockey team. Michael was fortunate to be a part of the 2002-3 NCAA Division 3 national championship team for Norwich and to be named team Captain for the 2005-6 season.
During his time at Norwich, Mike embraced the Norwich family and community and in turn they embraced him. While studying and playing hockey at Norwich Michael became acutely aware that he was a role model for the young kids and hockey fans of the community and he took those responsibilities seriously.
Mike graduated with honors with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 2005 and proceeded to enroll in the School of Graduate Studies to obtain his Master’s degree in Business.
Just prior to his expected graduation in 2007, Mike was tragically killed while visiting family and friends in Toronto in late November of 2006. Following an assault while at an ATM machine to withdraw funds, Michael was struck in the head with a brick by an assailant in the early hours of November 26th. He succumbed to his injuries on November 28th. His family made the decision to make Michael’s organs available and he now lives on in a number of recipients who received successful organ transplants.
The Mike Serba Memorial Golf Tournament is our way filling the void that was made when Mike left us all too early by having a day of good fun while raising monies towards a worthy cause.
